• STMicroelectronics Unveils Industry First Car-Door Controller IC with Integrated Window Control

Posted in Transport on January 27, 2012

STMicroelectronics today announced the market’s first multi-functional door-zone driver with an integrated electric-window control. ST’s newest door actuator driver L99DZ80 redefines the established system topology, removing the need for mechanical relays in car-window control. The innovation slashes component costs and eliminates expensive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) countermeasures, associated with the existing solutions, while enabling users to enjoy a smoother and quieter car-window operation.

  • Sonys CLEFIA Encryption Technology Adopted as an International Standard

Posted in Media Devices on January 27, 2012

Sony announced today that after final ISO/IEC approval, CLEFIA –the Sony developed block cipher algorithm was adopted as one of the ISO/IEC 29192 International Standards in lightweight cryptography. CLEFIA has the same interface as the US government’s Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). This block cipher has a block length of 128 bits, while key length can be selected from 128 bits, 192 bits or 256 bits. The most impressive feature of ‘CLEFIA’ is its realization of implementation efficiency while maintaining a high level of security.

Kyocera announces new residential energy management system for Japan market

Posted in Featured, Green Energy on January 27, 2012

Kyocera and Nichicon have completed an agreement for Kyocera to begin domestic sales of a new energy management system (EMS) which combines Kyocera’s highly reliable solar power generating systems with Nichicon’s long-lasting, high-capacity lithium-ion battery storage units. Designed for the Japan market, the new system responds to the growing demand for residential energy storage equipment following the March 11 disasters. Kyocera will begin sales in Japan this summer. Through its long-term R&D strategy and proprietary technology in solar and energy-related fields, Kyocera has developed an EMS which makes effective use of energy. By using Kyocera’s high quality solar power generating systems — which hold the No.2 Japanese market share and Nichicon’s energy storage system which utilizes a lithium-ion battery manufactured by Samsung SDI , the new energy system is able to more effectively control energy consumption.

Denso’s first EGR cooler for gasoline engines is 30 percent smaller than others in the market

Posted in Transport on January 27, 2012

In an effort to meet stricter fuel efficiency and exhaust emission regulations worldwide, Denso has developed its first EGR cooler for gasoline engines. The newly developed EGR cooler is 30 percent smaller than the smallest one currently available on the market, while offering equal performance. DENSO’s EGR cooler uses finer slits just 1 mm wide, compared with conventional models with internal fin slits measuring 4 to 5 mm in width, which allows the system to discharge more heat per unit volume. This design enabled DENSO’s EGR cooler to be 30 percent smaller than the smallest product in the market, all while offering equal performance.

Denso develops environmentally friendly smaller and lighter Radiator

Posted in Transport on January 27, 2012

Denso developed a new and more efficient radiator that is 40 percent smaller and lighter, compared to Denso’s previous radiators. The new light weight radiator’s tank is made with a plant-derived resin making it more environmentally friendly than conventional radiators. With higher heat radiation efficiency, the new radiator is only 16 mm wide, but equal in performance to the conventional 27 mm wide radiators, resulting in a substantial size and weight reduction. A radiator’s performance depends on its two major components – fins and tubes. The fin, using Denso’s manufacturing expertise, is the world’s thinnest of its kind. The radiator offers the same strength as Denso’s previous radiators while using thinner materials.

Mitsubishi Electric Launches 1200V/50A Large-Type Dual In-line Package Intelligent Power Module

Posted in Other Stuff on January 27, 2012

Mitsubishi Electric announced today the launch of the 1,200-volt large-type transfer-mold Dual In-line Package Intelligent Power Module (DIPIPM) Ver.4 (model PS22A79) with an industry-leading current rating of 50 amperes. The PS22A79 employs the newly developed sixth-generation IGBT (LPT-CSTBT: Light-Punch Trough Carrier Stored Trench-gate Bipolar Transistor), in which carrier storage is improved through cell pitch reduction and power loss is minimized through application of the thin wafer process. The model reduces power loss by 15% compared to the preceding fifth-generation IGBT.

Nintendo expected to lose 65 billion Yen this year

Posted in Gaming on January 27, 2012

Nintendo is expected to lose 65 billion yen ($840 million) this year, more than three times the amount it had earlier predicted due to the strong yen and price cuts. The Kyoto-based firm also downgraded its annual sales forecast to 660 billion yen ($8.53 billion) for the year to March, from an earlier forecast of 790 billion yen ($10.21 billion). Nintendo in August cut the price of its 3DS console from 25,000 yen ($323) to 15,000 yen ($193) in Japan, followed by similar cuts in foreign markets to boost unit sales going into the key Christmas season.

Mitsubishi Motors recalls nearly 300,000 small cars in Japan over engine oil leaks
