Verizon launches mobile phone TV programs in U.S.

America's second-largest cell phone provider Verizon Wireless on Thursday announced it has launched the country's first commercial mobile television service. With the launch of this eagerly awaited service U.S. cell phone users in 20 states can now view full-length television programs with picture quality similar to regular TV for 15 U.S. dollars a month. The venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc will utilize a service developed by Qualcomm Inc. unit MediaFlo and includes eight channels broadcasting full-length TV shows to phones 24 hours a day. The picture quality of the new service will be about twice as clear as Verizon Wireless's existing Vcast video service and on par with home TV. The first phone to support MediaFlo, the U620 from Samsung Electronics Co., is being sold for 199 dollars or 149.99 dollars for customers who sign a two-year contract. Verizon plans to add an LG Electronics Inc. phone in weeks.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced today that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first 1Gigabit (GB) DDR2 DRAM (dynamic random access memory) using 60 nanometer (nm)–class process technology. Use of the new process technology is a significant milestone in that it increases production efficiency by 40 percent over the 80nm process technology deployed in DRAM fabrication since early 2006, and offers twice the productivity of 90nm general process technology. In addition to its 60nm process technology innovation, Samsung’s use of metal-insulator metal (MIM) for its capacitors provides enhanced data storage in sub-70nm designs.

Samsung develops world's slimmest LCD panel for mobile phones

Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. Korea has developed the world's slimmest LCD panel measuring only 0.74 mm in thickness. In the recent trend for slimmer mobile phones, manufactures are increasingly reducing the thickness of compact LCD panels. The latest panel is a 2.3-inch model with a resolution of 320 x 240. It features a luminance of 300 cd/m2 and a gamut of 70% NTSC. Samsung has adopted frame technologies called "high-strength brick type bezel" and "multilayer hemming bezel." to avoid degradation in strength and durability due to the reduced thickness. Samsung was issued 10 patents for its frame technologies in and outside Korea.
