The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Acer America today announced a voluntary program for the replacement of certain notebook computer lithium-ion batteries containing Sony-made cells. The following Acer notebook computer models sold in the United States and Canada may have battery packs affected by this replacement program: TravelMate Series Beginning with:242x, 320x, 321x, 330x, 422x, 467x, 561x, C20x. Aspire Series Beginning with:556x, 560x, 567x, 930x, 941x, 980x. Acer said that the specific lithium-ion batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced the names of two new models. The U.S.-market Lancer will be renamed Galant Fortis for the Japan domestic market. Also, Mitsubishi's rally-inspired, high-performance 4WD sedan will carry the name Lancer Revolution X. The development concept for the new Galant Fortis1 calls for a "new-generation global sedan with world-class levels of safety, environmental performance and comfort". Distinguishing features include: a high-rigidity platform that delivers excellent crashworthiness; a new 2-liter engine with aluminum cylinder block that delivers high power output and returns excellent fuel efficiency; exterior styling that imparts a broad stance and sporty lines; and a spacious, well-appointed cabin.

Google has knocked Microsoft from its perch as the world's top-ranked brand, according to findings released on Monday. The rankings, compiled by market research firm Millward Brown, also put Google ahead of well-established brands like General Electric, No 2; Coca-Cola., No 4; Wal-Mart Stores, No 7; and IBM, No 9.For Google, which ranked No 7 a year ago, the jump to the top underscores how quickly the web search leader has become an everyday name. The company uses relatively little advertising, instead relying on word-of-mouth promotion. The top-ranked brand from a non-US-based company was China Mobile, which dropped a spot but still came in at No 5.

Epson announced that it has developed an LCD controller that can drive high-resolution panels up to XGA level. The new Epson S1D13513 controller enables external connection of up to 64 MB of SDRAM to run features such as 16 sprite functions and simultaneous display on three screens. This reduces load on the main CPU and achieves outstanding display quality. Versatility was a key consideration in developing the controller, which has a wide array of CPU interface modes, running connection verifications for more than 10 types of CPU.
