Teijin Chemicals Ltd., Japan, announced that the specialty polycarbonate resin developed by the company Panlite is used for the windows of N700 line, the next-generation Shinkansen bullet trains. Central Japan Railway Co. will begin a commercial service of N700 line on July 1, 2007. Panlite is a polycarbonate resin that was first commercialized in Japan by Teijin Chemicals. This product has many outstanding characteristics such as high impact strength, heat resistance, dimensional stability, electrical properties, transparency, and sanitary properties.

Teijin Chemicals will supply about 20,000 sheets for the windows of the normal seat cars to Central Japan Railway. Traditionally, the windows of Shinkansen bullet trains are made of composite glass, double-glazed glass to which a specialty polycarbonate sheet is attached to increase durability against flying stones and others. By using only the specialty polycarbonate sheet, the amount of the materials needed for a window is reduced by about 50 %, compared with traditional products, and the mass per unit area is reduced by about 30 %. Also, its durability is the same or more than conventional products.

Sharp has unveiled the GP1S296HCPSF photo interrupter for use in the lens unit of camera-equipped mobile phones. A photo interrupter is a photo sensor composed of light-emitting and light-receiving devices. It detects the existence/nonexistence of the target object or the movement of the object with a light beam emitted from the light-emitting device. The company has reportedly revised its proprietary double mold structure and reduced the thickness of the resin molded portion. The detection width of the lens movable part is reduced from the existing 0.3 to 0.2 mm while maintaining the distance between the light-emitting and light-receiving devices, thereby allowing higher resolution detection.

Wooyoung Korea announced its development of products of mass production of LED backlight units (BLUs), which are anticipated to become the new LCD market. Wooyoung moved into mass production of 1.9-inch and 2.1-inch LED BLUs for small size mobile phones from May 2005, and has set up the related facility with the aim of starting production of 13.1, 15.4 and 24-inch notebook PC and monitor LED BLUs from September. The company is slated to stretch its capacity to 250,000 units by the end of the year through additional models. Wooyoung has been successful in developing its own technology necessary to roll out a slim type light guide panel boasting one third thickness (0.7mm) of that of the CCFL light guide panel, the core component for LED BLU manufacture.

Epson has developed the S1F87110, a new automatic luminance controller IC that makes it possible to automatically control backlight luminance in real time. The Epson S1F87110 IC is installed with Epson's original luminance control data, making it possible to achieve real-time automatic luminance control according to ambient brightness by simply connecting an external ambient light sensor. This product allows users to utilize the PWM-controlled automatic luminance control function just by hooking it up to their existing LED drivers. Use of this automatic luminance control function reduces LED current consumption by 20-30% while simultaneously improving the picture quality of the display.

Iljin Display of South Korea would embark on mass production of super small projectors allowing the display of video images stored in mobile handsets with a maximum size of 20-inch from September. Last year the company developed its Nano Projector that enables users to project video images from mobile handsets on a wall by incorporating Single LCD Panel technology. Iljin Display recently signed an agreement with SK Telecom for an exclusive commercialization of Nano Projectors. Under the deal, the Korean vendor will commence mass production of Nano Projector for use in SK Telecom mobile phones from September, and SK Telecom will receive the products to sell them at home and abroad.
