Toshiba RD-A301 digital video records HD video to standard DVD discs!

Toshiba today announced the launch of a new digital video recorder RD-A301 (DVR) with HD DVD drive that integrates key new features that bring greater freedom of recording to the HD DVD, including recording of HD video to standard DVD discs. The Toshiba RD-A301 with 300GB built in hard disk integrates an HD Transcoder that converts MPEG2 video, the standard for digital HD broadcasts, to MPEG4 AVC, a high-efficiency video compression technology that supports longer recording times while maintaining picture quality. The DVR also supports "HD Rec", which facilitates recording of HD video on conventional DVD discs, such as DVD-R discs. "HD Rec" allows a single-layer 4.7GB DVD-R disc to store up to two hours of HD video, working in combination with HD Transcoder.

Sanyo and Coca-Cola develops non-fluorocarbon Beverage Coolers for Beijing Olympics

Sanyo Li-ion Rechargeable Battery for Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

Sanyo Electric Co Ltd exhibited a Li-ion rechargeable battery module for hybrid vehicles and a Li-ion rechargeable battery cell for plug-in hybrid vehicles at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, which is open to public from Oct 27 to Nov 11, 2007.The Sanyo battery module for hybrid vehicles measures 800 mm x 322 mm x120mm weighs 37.5kg and has a capacity of 31L. The Sanyo battery module for hybrid vehicles uses 72 cells connected in series to generate a voltage of 266V.

Sanyo Electric did not reveal the electric power capacity and output of the module. But assuming that the current capacity of the cell is 6-6.5Ah, which is on par with that of the existing Ni-MH rechargeable batteries designed for hybrid vehicles, the power capacity is expected to reach approximately 1.6-1.7kWh.

Tiny wireless sensors to monitor bearings in jet engines

Researchers at Purdue University, working with the U.S. Air Force, have developed tiny wireless sensors resilient enough to survive the harsh conditions inside jet engines to detect when critical bearings are close to failing and prevent breakdowns. The devices are an example of an emerging technology known as "micro electromechanical systems," or MEMS, which are machines that combine electronic and mechanical components on a microscopic scale.The engine bearing, must function amid temperatures of about 300 degrees Celsius, or 572 degrees Fahrenheit.

Samsung to Mass Produce LED from 4-inch Wafer

Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd. will initiate mass production of light emitting diodes (LEDs) using 4-inch wafer. A single sheet of 2-inch wafer that is adopted by most market players can be cut into 15,000 LED chips, while the 4-inch wafer can be cut into more than 60,000 units, resulting in a four-time higher productivity. The company has almost completed the installation of 4-inch wafer plant equipment, and plans to start testing for LED production by the end of the year and move into mass production using 4-inch wafer from next year.

Amy Pickard wakes from six year coma after being given Miracle pill Zolpidem

Amy Pickard who has been in a coma for the past six years is slowly coming back to life after being given sleeping pills. Amy Pickard, from Hastings in East Sussex, was only 17 when she slipped into a coma in 2001. Hino Motors Four Cameras monitor system Show Bird's-Eye View of Vehicle

Hino Motors Japan, unveiled a monitor system for trucks to display a bird's eye view of the vehicle in color, as well as its surroundings, captured with four identical cameras. The Hino Motors monitor system employs CCD cameras that have a high resolution of about 3 Mpixels, frame rate of 30fps and viewing angle of 140°.

The front and rear cameras both cover the display range of about 5m, while the range covered by each of the side cameras is about 2.5m. Based on the images supplied from the side cameras, the system determines the distance with an error within about 10cm. The electronic control unit (ECU) provided for image processing is a product manufactured by Denso Corp. Hino Motors' system is equipped with an algorithm used for detecting the movement of an object. This algorithm prevents the erroneous detection of stationary object by factoring in the relative speed between the vehicle and the object.

The monitor normally displays an image shot with three cameras mounted on the front and both sides of the vehicle. When the driver puts the shift lever in reverse, the image on the screen is switched over to the one shot with the cameras on the rear and both sides.
