Kodak recently unveiled the first product in a new generation of color motion picture films, continuing the company’s dedication to film technology and setting a higher standard for image quality. KODAK VISION3 500T Color Negative Film, available now in 35mm and 16mm formats, represents a new emulsion platform, incorporating technical breakthroughs that deliver greater efficiencies and expand creative options for filmmakers.
KODAK VISION3 Film offers increased exposure latitude and color detail with noticeably reduced grain, especially in the brightest highlights and darkest shadows. It incorporates proprietary Advanced Dye-Layering Technology (DLT), which renders finer grain images in underexposed areas and produces cleaner film-to-digital transfers for postproduction. This new product also takes advantage of innovative film technology that allows the emulsion to process light more effectively and record greater detail in the highlights. This image structure translates into time saved on the set and in postproduction.
NVIDIA Corporation and Planar Systems are cooperating closely to produce display systems that will enable doctors to more effectively screen for breast cancer. The two companies are working to develop high-contrast, 10-bit grayscale display systems for use in mammography and other medical applications. Instead of developing specialty hardware, NVIDIA and Planar have developed a method of “pixel packing” that allows 10-bit or 12-bit grayscale data to be transmitted from an NVIDIA Quadro graphics board to a Planar Dome display using a standard DVI cable. Instead of three 8-bit grayscale channels, now two 10- or 12-bit channels are transmitted, providing up to 864 possible shades of gray at more than three times the image contrast of an 8-bit system.
Kyocera launched the series production of a 7.5 inch LCD with LED backlight solution, in both color passive and active matrix. Kyocera LCDs with LED backlights are suitable for portable devices and measuring instruments. The LED backlight solution does not only meet Kyocera’s claim for ecological products but also contributes to an increased reliability: The on-chip LEDs offer improved vibration and shock resistance over CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp), which incorporate glass tubes. The LED backlight solution of the 7.5 inch LCD allows luminance to be controlled. A "low luminance" mode is possible for operating environments with low ambient lighting, which reduces power consumption and extend battery life.

Sony Corp developed a CMOS camera to be used for Nissan Motor's "around view monitor," which displays an overhead view of a vehicle with four cameras. The Sony CMOS camera with 1.3 million pixels, 30 frame rate per second has 186.2° in a horizontal direction and 147° in a vertical direction view angle. So far, a small number of CMOS cameras have been adopted for vehicles because their performance, such as noise under low-light intensity, is worse than that of CCD cameras. Though Sony did not reveal the performance of this CMOS camera, the company said, "of course, it reached the required level for vehicles."
Amputees could soon be fitted with prosthetic limbs that enable them to regain their sense of touch, thanks to a break-through new bionic hand device. The advance is the latest of several recent developments by Dr. Todd Kuiken whose targeted reinnervation (TR) technique is opening up a wealth of possibilities in the field. A former US marine, who lost her arm in a motorcycle accident, says she can feel pressure and pain in her new limb. She underwent surgery alongside a fellow male patient. The operation redirected the nerves from their injured arms into the skin on their chest, meaning they can now feel just as though they still had real hands. Claudia Mitchell, 27, who lost her left arm at the shoulder three years ago, was fitted with the world's most advanced prosthetic arm after the operation pioneered by Todd Kuiken. Sixty years old Jesse Sullivan – a double amputee is the world's first bionic man to be fitted with prostheses by Dr Kuiken's team.
