Honda first to offer Drive Recorder

Honda will start offering a drive recorder as a dealer option. Honda is the first automobile manufacturer that ever sells drive recorders, which have only been available from auto supply manufacturers. Not a few auto manufacturers hesitate to commercialize their own drive recorders. That is because they must guarantee that the recorded video is "genuine," if their drive recorders are used to record how an accident took place. It is also awkward for automobile manufacturers to sell products that are designed to be used after an accident. As a result, Honda commercialized the drive recorder primarily not for "recording how an accident occurred" but for "preventive safety, which might be enhanced if drivers maintain safe driving while being conscious that a device is continuously recording their driving" said a company spokesman.

The Honda drive recorder uses flash memory and a 512-Mb SD memory card with thermo resistance optimized for automobile applications. Storing video in flash memory first, the drive recorder then transmits the part before and after an accident is triggered to the SD memory card. Video can also be recorded onto a standard SD memory card in addition to SD memory cards tailored for automobile applications.

Instructions to make a flying carpet!

Perfectly timed for pantomime season, a team of scientists has come up with instructions for how to make a flying carpet. The magical device may owe more to Walt Disney than to The Arabian Nights, but it is not pure fantasy, according to Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his co-workers. The researchers have studied the aerodynamics of a flexible, rippling sheet moving through a fluid, and find that it should be possible to make one that will stay aloft in air. The researchers say that to stay afloat in air, a sheet measuring about 10 centimeters long and 0.1 millimeters thick would need to vibrate at about 10 hertz with an amplitude of about 0.25 millimeters. No such carpet is going to ferry people around, though. Making a heavier carpet "fly" is not forbidden by the laws of physics.

NewHonda Inspire only domestic 3.5-liter-class sedan in Japan to run on regular, unleaded gasoline

Honda announced the release of the all-new Inspire. The new Honda Inspire is equipped with a full range of safety equipment. A driver and front-passenger i-SRS airbag system, front-seat i-side airbag system, and side curtain airbag system are standard equipment on all types, along with Honda’s original Advanced Compatibility Engineering body, which provides a high level of protection to vehicle occupants while also helping to reduce the force of the impact on the other vehicle during a collision.

The 35iL also features Honda’s CMBS (Collision Mitigation Brake System) and E-pretensioners as standard equipment. CMBS determines if there is a danger of a rear-end collision and alerts the driver, further functioning to mitigate injuries and vehicle damage in the event of a collision.

The V6 3.5-liter i-VTEC engine, available for the first time in Japan, features an advanced Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that switches between six-, four-, and three-cylinder combustion depending on the driving conditions. This system is combined with numerous improvements to aspiration and combustion efficiency to achieve high output of 206kW (280PS) and high torque of 342N•m (34.9kg•m), and making the new Inspire the only domestic 3.5-liter-class sedan in Japan to run on regular, unleaded gasoline.

In order to deliver the sort of direct handling feel and smooth ride comfort one expects in a luxury sedan, the new Inspire features a newly developed suspension, along with a lightweight, high-rigidity body for a lower center of gravity and reduced inertia. The interior design blends luxury with advanced functionality.
