- Shipments top 20 million units of one-segment digital TV mobile phones in January in Japan
Cumulative shipments in Japan of third-generation mobile phones compatible with digital terrestrial television broadcast services topped 20 million units in January for the first time since the service began in April 2006, an industry group said Wednesday. Shipments of the "one-segment" digital TV mobile phones came to 20,473,000 units, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said.

- Polymer Vision to ship 100,000 units of Readius- a mobile phone with an electronic paper display to Telecom Italia
Polymer Vision Ltd of the Netherlands exhibited a mobile phone "Readius," which is equipped with a foldable electronic-paper display, at Mobile World Congress 2008. Users can reduce the storage space of the handset by folding up the electronic-paper display. The display is extended when the handset is used, and folded when it is stored, for example, in a pocket. Designed around ease of use and mobility, Readius can last for 30 hours of continuous reading without battery (1,100mAh) charge. The 3G HSDPA tri-band phone allows worldwide calls and high speed instant updates from personally selected news sources, email and other services. Readius also features audio capabilities, including MP3, for podcasts, audio books and music.The first customer will be Telecom Italia, a telecommunications carrier in Italy, Polymer Vision said. The company plans to ship about 100,000 units by the end of 2008.

- Glitch delays launch of Japanese high-speed Internet communications satellite Kizuna
The launch of a satellite for high-speed Internet communications on Japan's domestically built H-2A rocket has been postponed at a yet-to-be decided date because of a glitch, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said Wednesday. The launch was initially scheduled for Friday at Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture. The problem concerns loading a propellant agent into the position control engine in the second phase of the rocket, they said.

- Alcatel-Lucent and NEC joint venture to develop ultra-high-speed mobile phone technology
French-US telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent announced a joint venture with Japanese group NEC on Tuesday to develop ultra-high-speed mobile phone technology. The joint company will work on building phone infrastructure to the LTE (Long Term Evolution) norm that will allow high-speed transfer speeds for mobile phones around the year 2010 that are equivalent to broadband Internet. This fourth generation technology, capable of data transfer speeds of 1 megabyte a second, is expected to spur development of mobile television, interactive games and email.
