- Color projector that is as small as a cigarette case from Nippon Signal
Nippon Signal, Japan exhibited an SVGA (resolution: 800 x 600) compact color projector that is as small as a cigarette case at Exhibition Micromachine/MEMS. Nippon Signal exhibited a prototype with the same resolution at the previous exhibition, but it was about the size of a lunch box (approximately 180 x 120 x 50mm). This time, the company reduced the size of the projector to about 1/8 (90 x 55 x 20mm) by reducing the size of the optical system such as lenses and the MEMS scanner that scans laser light beams in RGB colors. In addition to the size reduction, the quality of displayed images was significantly improved. The new projector used the semiconductor laser for the green laser light source, instead of the diode pumping solid state (DPSS) laser, which was used in the previous prototype. The adoption of semiconductor laser eliminated the need for an acoustic optical modulator (AOM), which was used along with DPSS, because the semiconductor laser light can be modulated by itself at a high speed.

- Yamaha PAS Brace hybrid electric bicycle assists pedaling at all of its eight gear speeds
Yamaha Motor Co Ltd will release a hybrid electric bicycle that optimally assists the pedaling at all of its eight gear speeds in Japan. The new sporty model Yamaha bicycle, "PAS Brace," is aimed at male users. Its assisting power is controlled according to the gear position and the speed, realizing a sporty ride. The Yamaha PAS Brace features an eight-speed gear for a smooth ride and a shift position sensor to detect the gear speed at which it is running. Furthermore, a system called "S.P.E.C.8" decides an optimal assisting power at any time in the ride including the starting up, accelerating and running phases of the ride.
Electricity supply begins to decrease after the speed reaches 15km/h (9.32mph), and no electricity is provided at the speed of 24km/h or more. At the speed of less than 24km/h, the S.P.E.C.8 efficiently assists the pedaling by minutely controlling the electricity supply according to the gear in use. Therefore, if the eight-speed gear is efficiently used, the bicycle can provide an even smoother and sportier ride.

- Casio Tough Movement for high shock resistance radio controlled solar watches
Casio announced the development of -Tough Movement, a movement for radio controlled solar watches that features a high shock resistance and a hand position correction function using LED. The new Casio Tough Movement combines metal and plastic parts in order to reduce the weight, while increasing the rigidity. It is designed in consideration of the shape and the position of each part, and the balance between the volume of metal and plastic parts. The Tough Movement can receive time calibration signals from six bases located in Kyushu area and Fukuoka in Japan, the US, the UK, Germany and China.
The positions of the hands are detected at 55'00" of every hour and if the time indicated by the watch does not coincide with that of the time counter in the IC, the movement corrects the hand position. With the adoption of the "Quartzless Heterodyne Method," which eliminates the need for a quartz filter for signal reception, Casio reduced the number of parts while maintaining the reception sensitivity.

- Korea develops atomic clock which is out by one second once every 300,000 years
The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science have developed an atomic clock that corrects any time errors on its own. The institute had help from overseas for the corrections as it did not know by how much an atomic clock errs. The new clock, dubbed KRISS-1, can measure and correct the errors for itself. The cesium atomic clock defines one second as the duration of 9,192,631,770 resonance frequency cycles of the cesium atom. But discrepancies occur due to the earth's magnetic field, temperature and gravity.

- Kyocera Develops fine ceramic with a color that closely resembles 18-karat gold
Kyocera has developed a new fine ceramic with a color that closely resembles 18-karat gold. The material has been created by raising the brightness level approximately 5% (approx. 3.6 points) above previous gold ceramic products. The three inherent attributes of color are luminosity, hue and saturation. Luminosity refers to the visually perceived brightness or darkness of a color as a percentage. In developing the new gold fine ceramic material, Kyocera increased the luminosity of its previous gold fine ceramic – one of 18 colored fine ceramics provided by Kyocera – while retaining the material’s outstanding hardness. This made it possible to more closely recreate the texture and color of 18-karat gold.
