Epson today announced the development of Photo Fine HR transflective amorphous silicon TFT (a-TFT) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for use in mobile devices. - Honda Begins Sales of Thin-Film Solar Cells for Public and Industrial Use in Japan

- Nissan Intelligent Transport System to reduce pedestrian-vehicle collisions in future
Nissan will initiate a large-scale community-based test of its Intelligent Transport System (ITS), integrating cellular communications with vehicle telematics to help prevent pedestrian-related accidents. This represents the first and largest such experiment conducted of its kind, involving 500 pedestrians and 200 drivers, and in collaboration with NTT DoCoMo Inc, the largest mobile network operator in Japan. Participants will use a special cellular phone that is compatible to the Nissan navigation system on-board test vehicles, and simply go about their regular daily routines, commuting within the neighborhood. As a vehicle is approaching a residential city area where many blind intersections exist, the driver can be alerted of a pedestrian hidden around the corner, by voice message and screen display via the navigation system.

- Samsung withdraws its offer to acquire SanDisk
Samsung formally withdrew its offer to acquire SanDisk at $26 per share in a letter issued just after midnight Tuesday, saying that because of "growing uncertainties in your business, which may continue to deteriorate in this difficult economic environment ... we are no longer interested in acquiring SanDisk at $26 per share." Although Samsung Electronics had made efforts to pursue an acquisition with SanDisk Corporation for last six months, both parties have not been able to reach an agreement.

- Every second American receives a work-related phone call or email while in the bathroom
More than half of working Americans - 53 percent - have been interrupted by a work-related phone call or email while in the bathroom, according to a survey commissioned by Nokia. The survey revealed that office-related intrusions invaded other areas of Americans' lives as well. Twenty-four percent have allowed a call or email to interrupt them while in the throes of passion and 23 percent while on a date. That may be because most working Americans - 59 percent - never turn off their mobile device.

- Fujitsu develops World's Highest Output Power Gallium-Nitride HEMT Power Amplifier
Fujitsu announced today the development of a new high-efficiency, high-output amplifier based on gallium-nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) that produces over 300 watts (300W) of power in the C band with 60% efficiency as a ratio of DC input power converted to high-frequency output power. Use of GaN HEMT technology increases output power over existing amplifiers using gallium-arsenide (GaAs) transistors (comparison by Fujitsu Laboratories) by more than six-fold, to 320W. This is expected to extend radar detection range by 2.4 times.
