The X-GOLD110 is the heart of Infineon’s mobile phone platform XMM 1100 offering optimized functionalities on a small footprint 4-Layer-PCB. The new platform supports colour display, mp3 playback, FM Radio, USB charging and is prepared for Dual-Sim and camera solutions. The Infineon XMM1100 helps to shorten internal research cycles at the phone manufacturers from more than one year to 3 to 4 month, due to the high amount of know-how integrated in the platform and the almost ‘plug-and-play’ qualification.

- Japan launches world’s first greenhouse-gas monitoring satellite IBUKI (GOSAT)
Japan has launched a satellite that will be used to observe the concentration distribution of greenhouse gases from space. The launch of the Ibuki satellite (also known by GOSAT - Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite) took place on January 23 at 03:54 UTC from the LP1 launch platform of the Yoshinubo launch complex on Tanegashima. Ikubi has a approximate mass of 1750 kg. Is equipped with two solar panels that generate 3.8 kW. The satellite will operate for 5 years on a sun-synchronous sub-recurrent orbit with a inclination of 98 deg. The launch vehicle used was the 202 version of the H-2A rocket equipped with two solid rocket boosters and with the 4S fairing design (4 meters in diameter). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. was in charge of the launch service of the H-IIA.

Software giant Microsoft announced on Thursday that it would slash 5.5 percent of its jobs, in light of the further deterioration of global economic conditions. The cut would affect 5,000 of its nearly 90,000 employees, and 1,400 layoffs would take effect on Thursday, according to the announcement. This would be the first mass layoff in the 33-year-old tech giant Microsoft’s history.

- Solarmer Energy develops plastic solar cells
Solarmer Energy Inc. is developing plastic solar cells for portable electronic devices that will incorporate technology invented at the University of Chicago. The University licensed the patent rights to the technology to Solarmer last September. The prototype, a cell measuring eight square inches (50 square centimeters), is expected to achieve 8 percent efficiency and to have a lifetime of at least three years. The invention, a new semiconducting material called PTB1, converts sunlight into electricity. Inventors Luping Yu, Professor in Chemistry, and Yongye Liang, a Ph.D. student, both at the University of Chicago.

- Mitsubishi Electric announces laser diode with World’s highest wall plug efficiency for palm-size mobile color projectors
Mitsubishi Electric has developed a 638-nanometer wavelength laser diode with the world’s highest output power of 110 milliwatts in single lateral-mode operation, for use in palm-size mobile color projectors and other display systems. This laser diode, the ML520G54, also achieves the world’s highest wall plug efficiency of 28 percent. Laser diodes are widely used in optical disc systems, such as recordable DVD players, and optical communication equipment. Recently, the market is seeking to further extend the use of laser diodes to display equipment.
