Fujitsu Micro announces world’s first 1394 Automotive for high-definition video in Vehicle Networks: Fujitsu Micro today introduced the world’s first 1394 Automotive controller that transmits high-definition video over the 1394 in-vehicle multimedia network. The new Fujitsu MB88395 controller can simultaneously transmit multiple streams around the vehicle, such as HD video (1,280 dots x 720 lines) from Blu-Ray DVDs, digital TV, and car navigation images. The Fujitsu MB88395 uses a high-speed 800Mbps physical layer and link layer, along with the Fujitsu proprietary SmartCODEC, which provides high compression and can transmit HD video without perceptible latency. This combination brings the rich-HD experience to rear-seat entertainment, reduces vehicle weight and improves fuel efficiency. The combination reduces the system cost of in-vehicle multimedia networks by up to 30 percent, while reducing the number of wire harnesses by a maximum of 70 percent, and can reduce the environmental impact by approximately 10kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year for a car traveling 10,000km. That roughly translates to the amount of CO2 a beech tree absorbs in one year.

Eizo Nanao FlexScan monitors motion sensor saves energy by activating the screen only when a user is present.: Eizo Nanao today introduced two monitors, the 23-inch FlexScan EV2303W and the 20-inch FlexScan EV2023W. The monitors are among the world’s first group of products to receive the just-announced TCO Displays 5.0 certification. They are also the first EIZO products to achieve EPEAT Gold status. EIZO FlexScan EV2023W and EV2023W debut several features including a slimmed-down cabinet design, a motion sensor that saves energy by activating the screen only when a user is present. EIZO’s new integrated EcoView Sense feature offers convenience and energy savings by detecting when the user is present. EcoView Sense will prompt the monitor to switch to power save mode when it does not detect anyone for 40 seconds, and then resume normal operation when the user returns. EcoView Sense can differentiate between animate and inanimate objects so it will still enter power save mode if it detects an object such as the backrest of a chair.

Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO LOOX U/C50N Eco-Japan's First Notebook PC with Green Power Certificate: Fujitsu Japan, today announced the release of the new FMV-BIBLO LOOX U/C50N Eco model, the Japan's first notebook PC to take part in Japan's Green Power Certification System. For each Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO LOOX U/C50N Eco sold, Fujitsu will purchase a Green Power Certificate equivalent to the total electricity the PC will consume in the course of its operating lifespan. When customers use their notebooks, the electricity consumed will be regarded as "green energy" that is generated from renewable sources and results in zero net CO2 emissions.

Genetically modified pig raises hope in developing humanized organs and organ parts: South Korean researchers have created a genetically modified pig whose organs can be used for transplanting into human patients. The researchers have predicted the mass production of these hybrid pigs capable of producing humanized organs and organ parts, including pancreatic islets of Langerhans, heart valves and entire hearts. But they have yet to prove the organs can be transplanted into human patients without risk to life. The piglet is part of the ``mini-pig'' species that grow up to just around 80 kilograms.

Hitachi refrigerators advertised as using recycled materials in reality used no recycled materials at all: The Japan Fair Trade Commission issued an improvement order to Hitachi Appliances, Inc., after it advertised is large refrigerators as using recycled materials when in reality, almost no recycled parts were used. The order issued against the company applies to nine products released between September and November last year in Hitachi's "Eiyo Ikiiki Shinku Chirudo V" and "Big & Slim 60" series. The products received an energy conservation award from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in fiscal 2008, but on Monday Hitachi applied to have the award withdrawn and the ministry accepted.
