Micromachined piezoelectric harvester generates electrical power from vibrations
wireless_sensor.jpg For the first time, a piezoelectric harvesting device fabricated by MEMS technology generates a record of 85μW electrical power from vibrations. A wafer level packaging method was developed for robustness. The packaged MEMS-based harvester is used to power a wireless sensor node. Within the Holst Centre program on Micropower Generation and Storage, imec researchers developed a temperature sensor that can wirelessly transmit data in a fully autonomous way. Once fully mature, the technology can be used to power sensors in industrial applications such as tire-pressure monitoring and predictive maintenance of moving or rotating machine parts.

Toshiba Develops World's first practical technology to extend bulk CMOS to 20nm generation
Toshiba-CMOS.jpg Toshiba has developed a breakthrough technology for steep channel impurity distribution that delivers a solution to a key problem for 20nm generation CMOS technology. The technology opens the door to a future generation of LSI fabricated with bulk CMOS technology, the mainstream technology in today's LSI, by achieving the world's first practical fabrication process applicable to 20nm generation CMOS devices. The new technology forms three layers on the surface of the channel: epitaxial silicon (Si), carbon-doped silicon (Si:C), and boron-doped Si:C. The top epitaxial Si layer functions as a low resistance path for the electrons and the holes; the intermediate Si:C acts as a defensive layer to prevent impurity diffusion; and the bottom boron-doped Si:C layer suppresses the fixed charge caused by the Si:C layer formation.

LEDs provide authentic period-style lighting for a historical centre
Led_Streetlighting.jpg In Regensburg, Osram Opto Semiconductors and Siemens have demonstrated that energy-saving LEDs can provide authentic period-style lighting for a historical centre. Regensburg has narrow alleys and many winding streets in a multitude of different lengths and widths. And this is why the intricately structured town needs luminaires which enhance its historical ambience. The street lights must not be dazzling in residential areas, for instance, nor should they spoil the romantic atmosphere of candle-lit restaurants. Discreetly installed in the luminaires prescribed by the Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, they target the precise spot they are intended to illuminate, thus avoiding light pollution.

Panasonic announces world first demonstration of a single chip GaN-based inverter IC for motor drive
panasonic_gan.jpg Panasonic today announced the development of a Gallium Nitride (GaN) -based monolithic inverter integrated circuit (IC) for motor drive. The integrated six GaN-based transistors can be independently driven in a single chip, which enables successful motor drive with high efficiency. The new Panasonic GaN inverter IC is applicable to motor drive in a variety of consumer electronics. Successful motor drive is confirmed using the new GaN-based monolithic inverter IC. The conversion loss is effectively reduced by 42% from that by conventional Si-based IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) at the output power of 20W. The integration reduces the parasitic inductance so that the switching loss is effectively reduced. The inverter IC is the world first demonstration of a single chip GaN-based inverter IC for motor drive.
