Sanyo will install megawatt-level HIT photovoltaic modules at the city hall, community center and other sites in Awaji City, Hyogo, Japan. Working together, the City of Awaji and Hyogo Prefecture expect that the new solar power facilities will help attract environmentally conscious companies to the area, while promoting green energy and serving as a symbol of Awaji as an environmental island. The facilities will also be utilized to promote environmental learning and the entire project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010. The scale of new solar power facilities will be 1 megawatt, one of the largest of its kind for a public system in Japan, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 330 tons per year. Awaji Island is blessed with tranquil seas, beautiful countryside, and a lot of sunshine, with the highest annual sunshine hours in the Kinki region.
LG Display today became the world’s first to achieve the Windows 7 Touch Logo Certification with in-cell touch panels. The certified LG product is a 13.3-inch Capacitive In-Cell Multi-Touch LCD Panel for notebook PCs with multi-touch functions that enable simultaneous recognition of two touch points. Unlike the conventional touch screen products where generally films for touch screen function are applied to the standard display, the product has touch sensors built into the display. Fully internalized within the display, the in-cell touch sensor has many benefits over the films additionally attached to the products.
Hyundai Motor, Korea’s largest automaker is allegedly seeking to cooperate with Apple to embrace the company’s iconic iPhone smartphone in its upcoming automobiles. Hyundai recently said it is preparing to converge vehicle and mobile phone, and is trying to co-plan and co-design with mobile-device makers. The company unveiled three concept designs using the iPhone in a vehicle: iPhone Control, Magnified iPhone and Advanced Luxury. According to the concept design, the iPhone will be put in a cradle and be able to control the automobile.
Toshiba has won a major contract from South Korea's Hyundai Rotem for supply of key electrical equipment and systems for electric locomotives for Korean Railroad Corporation (Korail). The contract covers traction drive systems and auxiliary power supply systems for 56 6,600kW electric freight locomotives. Delivery of the equipment will start in May 2011 and continue through to April of 2012, under a contract with a value of more than 10 billion yen ($108 million).

Japanese cab operator Hinomaru Limousine’s Mitsubishi. i-MiEV electric cars can travel 160 kilometers on a fully charged battery. Fares start at 710 yen ($7.80) for the first 2 kilometers, similar to most taxis.Mitsubishi announced on Wednesday that its auto-lease subsidiary would provide about 100 i-MiEV cars to the rental vehicle company Rentas over the next three years. Rentas, which has 350 shops, will be the first rental company to offer electric cars nationwide. An i-MiEV will cost 2,525 yen ( $27) for three hours.
Samsung announced today that it has begun shipping samples of the industry’s highest-density memory module for server systems. The 32 gigabyte (GB) module has been designed for use in advanced servers, which require high-density and high-performance features at low-power consumption levels. The highly-efficient Samsung 32GB RDIMM consists of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DDR3 chips that can perform at equal or greater levels to a 40nm-based 16GB RDIMM with no increase in power consumption. In addition, replacing 12 DRAM modules of 16GB density with just six 32GB modules would achieve a 192GB total density, while allowing the DRAM operating speed in a two-way server system to rise by 33 percent from 800 megabit per second (Mbps) to 1,066Mbps, as power is cut by 40 percent.
Panasonic celebrated today the completion of its new lithium-ion battery production facility in Suminoe, Osaka City, at a ceremony held on the premises. The Panasonic Suminoe Factory will now begin mass production of battery cells this April starting with an initial capacity of 10 million units per month during the first year of operations. Panasonic plans to gradually increase the production capacity up to 25 million per month (300 million units per year) during the first phase, taking into consideration market conditions. The factory will manufacture mainly Panasonic's high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, featuring its unique nickel-based positive electrodes, to meet the ever-growing demands for higher-capacity batteries. The Panasonic Suminoe Factory has been designed with a "safe, secure, and eco-conscious factory" concept. It offers integrated manufacturing from electrode fabrication to battery cell production, using advanced high-efficiency production equipment to achieve high productivity with reduced production lead times.
The new Casio Edifice watch EQW-M1100 is equipped with a 1/1000-second stopwatch and exciting disk-shaped indicators that show time measurement results. The new EQW-M1100 displays time elapsed using a smart combination of the second hand and motorized disk-shaped indicators. The disk-shaped indicator at the 9-o’clock position rotates forwards and backwards and, when time measurement is stopped, alternates between displaying the 1/1000th value and the 1/100th value.
