NEC announced today that it is working with the Electric Power Research Institute, (EPRI) to conduct joint field trials of an electricity storage system using NEC's lithium-ion battery. EPRI is an independent, non-profit organization which conducts research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public. Initial testing will be carried out at EPRI's Knoxville, Tenn., laboratory using NEC's integrated lithium-ion battery system to examine operational performance and functionality for U.S. grid compliance.
Sharp will introduce into the Japanese market two models in the new LB Series of AQUOS Quattron 3D LCD TVs. The LCD panels in the LB Series use four-primary-color technology developed by Sharp based on its proprietary UV2A technology. Nissan and Namco Bandai Games today announced the joint development of a driving simulator through which people can experience the near future of Yokohama City, in virtual reality, where a Smart Grid is in place. The simulator produces an ultra-high-definition 3D image with pixels approximately four times larger than the full high-definition image. Up to four people may use the simulator simultaneously. It can render road structure, buildings and facilities without any restrictions, so changes of the city landscape and functions caused by the introduction of the Smart Grid can be studied multilaterally and experientially. In addition, the Next-Generation ITS (Intelligent Transport System is an advanced information system that connects people, vehicles and traffic infrastructure that can contribute to improving road safety) that requires comprehensive evaluation with multiple vehicles can be tested in more realistic environments.

Murata on Monday revealed its latest model robot, a unicycle-riding machine that can make S-shaped curves on a balance beam. The robot, named Murata Seiko-chan, is 50 centimeters tall, weighs about 6 kilograms and is an improvement over the previous model that could only go in a straight line on the beam. Robot Seiko-chan instantaneously makes calculations to determine the degree to which the body must be turned to navigate the curves.The tire of the unicycle has a width of 1.5 cm. A camera installed within the robot recognizes the curved path of the beam, which is 2.5 cm wide.
NTT DoCoMo will conduct a trial e-book distribution service from late October to late December in Japan, aiming at gaining feedback from customers prior to the start of a full-scale e-book retail service with Dai Nippon Publishing early next year. During the trial, customers will have the opportunity to experience e-books via DoCoMo smartphones, such as the Android powered Xperia and Galaxy S models.The trial will offer about 50 titles, including electronic books, manga comics, magazines and photo books, some linked with supplementary videos and maps.The e-books will be available at docomo market, a mobile portal created by DoCoMo to provide users with easy access to smartphone apps and content from around the world. All titles and content viewers for the trial will be provided for free, other than packet transmission charges.
Kodak today announced a way to make the Kodak Gallery more social, by allowing users to join or login to Kodak Gallery using their Facebook account. With this feature, Facebook’s 500 million users can easily share their Kodak Gallery photos with their friends using their Facebook username and password. Instead of remembering various password and username combinations for logging in to access their Kodak Gallery account, users have to remember just one set of login credentials.
Fujitsu began shipping the computing units for Japan's Next-Generation Supercomputer, nicknamed the K computer. The Fujitsu supercomputer is a central part of the High-Performance Computing Infrastructure (HPCI) initiative led by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and is being jointly developed with RIKEN, an independent research institution funded by the Japanese government. The supercomputing system will be comprised of more than 800 computer racks, each installed with ultrafast CPUs, in a massively interconnected network, crystallizing Fujitsu's leading-edge technologies for high performance and high reliability.
Daihatsu is to supply minivehicles (Vehicles with an engine displacement of no greater than 660 cc and exterior dimensions no greater than 340 cm in length, 148 cm in width and 200 cm in height) to Toyota on an original-equipment-manufacturer's basis for sale in Japan. Daihatsu is to supply Toyota three models of mini vehicles in stages starting in autumn 2011, leading to an expected Toyota sales volume of approximately 60,000 mini vehicles annually (once all three models are on sale).
