The world's first mass-marketed, affordable, zero-emission vehicle for the global market the 100% electric Nissan LEAF beat 40 contenders to win motoring's most important accolade. This is the first time in the 47-year history of the annual competition that the award has gone to an electric vehicle. Nissan LEAF's rivals included vehicles from brands such as Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Dacia, Ford, Opel/Vauxhall and Volvo. The jury included 57 leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries. Nissan LEAF is powered by a compact electric motor in the front of the car, which drives the front wheels. The AC motor develops 80 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, enough for a maximum speed of 145 km/h (90 mph). The electric motor is powered by a Nissan-developed laminated lithium-ion battery with an output of more than 90 kW. The car has a range of 175 km (New European Driving Cycle) between charges making it a practical proposition for many urban drivers.
SanDisk, Sony and Nikon today announced the joint development of a set of specifications that address the future requirements of professional photography and video markets. The three companies proposed the specifications to the CompactFlash Association, the international standards organization, with the intent to standardize the format. The proposed specifications achieve data transfer rates of up to 500 megabytes per second (MB/sec) (theoretical maximum interface speed) using the highly versatile PCI Express interface. The increased speeds will enable imaging and video applications that could not be accomplished using the current CompactFlash specification's Parallel ATA (PATA) interface. CF6.0, released in November 2010, offers maximum performance of up to 167MB/sec.The new specifications' faster speeds enable continuous burst shooting of massive RAW images.

Russian President is not happy with the quality of the camera on his Samsung Galaxy Tab. On his official Twitter page on Monday (local time), he wrote, winter comes to Moscow. Picture taken with a Samsung Galaxy Tab. It's convenient, but the quality isn't great. Russian President received the newly-released tablet PC while visiting Korea for the G20 Seoul Summit earlier this month. As well as a frequent blogger and Twitter user, the 45-year-old president is a keen photographer and usually shoots with an 18-megapixel Leica M9 DSLR camera.
Sharp will introduce into the Japanese market three new digital full-color MFP models. The MX-2610FN, MX-3110FN, and MX-3610FN all features a large 10.1-inch touchscreen color LCD in a lightweight, compact body. Korean researchers have successfully created heart muscle cells from induced pluripotent stem (IPS) cells, which have the ability to become any cell in the human body, claiming a breakthrough in attempts to advance stem cell therapies. In their studies published in peer-review journals Cloning and Stem Cell and International Journal of Cardiology, scientists led by Jeju National University’s Park Se-phil said they successfully converted skin cells into IPS by injecting them with the embryonic stem cell genes of Oct4, Nanog, Sox2 and Lin28. The researchers then cultured heart muscle cells from their IPS samples, and verified the function of the cells through electrical-biological analysis, Park said.
Toshiba made a full-scale entry into the space-saving and environmentally conscious modular data center business, enhancing its data center business in expectation of rapid market growth in the near future. Toshiba completed an experimental demonstration facility at its Fuchu Complex in western Tokyo, as the first step in its entry into the Japanese market for modular data centers. The distinctive strength of Toshiba's modular data centers is that they can be installed with a shorter lead time and at a lower cost than an equivalent data center housed in a dedicated building.
High-performing motor drives for equipment such as security cameras, cash dispensers, ticketing machines, stage-lighting, printers and vending machines can now be realized more quickly, at lower cost and higher performances using a complete motor-control system on a chip perfected by STMicroelectronics. The 'digital SPIN', or dSPIN , combines all the necessary digital control, analog measurement, and power electronic circuitry for controlling stepper motors using ST’s advanced BCD fabrication process. It is the first device in ST's new dSPIN family of monolithic motor-control ICs that will bypass specialized hardware and software design tasks, reduce component count and pc-board area, and speed up time to market. Implementing the motor-control calculations in hardware simplifies software design by requiring only acceleration, deceleration, speed and target position commands from the application microcontroller. This frees microcontroller resources to support other differentiating features.
Honda unveiled the all-new Fit EV Concept electric vehicle at Los Angeles Auto Show. The Honda Fit EV is designed to meet the daily driving needs of the average metropolitan commuter and utilizes the same 5-passenger layout found in the popular Fit hatchback. When the Fit EV production model is introduced, it will be powered by a lithium-ion battery and coaxial electric motor. The high-density motor, derived from the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle, delivers excellent efficiency and power while remaining quiet at high speeds. The Fit EV will have a top speed of 90 mph.
The Fit EV will achieve an estimated 100-mile driving range per charge using the US EPA LA4 city cycle (70 miles when applying EPA's adjustment factor). Driving range can be maximized by use of an innovative 3-mode electric drive system, adapted from the 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid. In addition to the 3-mode E-Drive system, the Fit EV will include several interactive coaching systems to assist the driver in maximizing battery range.
