submarine_cable.jpg NEC announced today the successful completion of a multi-million-dollar contract with a purchasing consortium of 14 major telecom operators in the Asia Pacific region for the world's first 40Gb/s dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) capacity upgrade to an existing large scale submarine cable network. The existing APCN2 (Asia Pacific Cable Network), with over 19,000 km of cable that connects 10 landing stations in the Asia Pacific region, was originally supplied by NEC in 2001 with a 10Gb/s DWDM system design. In response to the rising transmission demands in the region, NEC proposed its state-of-the-art 40Gb/s DWDM technology as a dramatic enhancement and expansion to the capacity of the existing 10Gb/s submarine cable network.

Large-zone base stations, which are deployed separately from ordinary base stations in times of emergency, are among DoCoMo’s latest efforts to ensure the maintenance of mobile service during blackouts and natural disasters. Capable of sending and receiving signals to/from handsets in 360 degrees over distances of up to approximately seven kilometers, these special base stations are located on high atop extra-earthquake-resistant structures and incorporate independent power supply and redundant transmission lines for uninterrupted service.

ANA plane almost turn upside down as co-pilot presses command button instead cockpit door lock switch
ana-plane.jpg An All Nippon Airways plane narrowly avoided disaster earlier this month when it plunged over the Pacific, almost turning upside down. The ANA flight, with 117 passengers and crew on board, dived 1,900 meters in 30 seconds in the incident off the southern Shizuoka district, Japan on Sept 6. The maneuver happened when the co-pilot, in trying to unlock the cockpit door for the captain who was returning from the toilet, mistook a command button for the cockpit door lock switch nearby. The incident occurred at about 10:50 p.m. while the plane was making its way across the Pacific. A senior ANA official apologized to travelers at a press conference on Wednesday.

Samsung will pay Microsoft US$4-5 for each Android based smartphone it sells
Samsung-Android.jpg Microsoft today signed a broad patent agreement with Samsung to cross-license the patent portfolios of both companies. The agreement covers Samsung's use of the Android mobile platform, and also gives both companies greater patent coverage related to each other's technologies. Under the deal, Samsung will pay Microsoft US$4-5 for each Android mobile phones and tablets under the terms of the agreement announced today.
