Sharp Develops Solar Cell with Worlds Highest Conversion Efficiency of 36.9% using a triple-junction compound solar cell: Sharp has achieved the world’s highest solar cell conversion efficiency of 36.9% using a triple-junction compound solar cell in which the solar cell has a stacked three-layer structure. Compound solar cells utilize photo-absorption layers made from compounds consisting of two or more elements, such as indium and gallium. Because of their high conversion efficiency, compound solar cells have been used primarily on space satellites. This latest increase in conversion efficiency was achieved by improving the maximum power output of the solar cell by reducing the resistance of the junction areas necessary to connect the solar cell layers in series.

S&P downgrades Panasonic one notch to A with a negative outlook: Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s today downgraded Panasonic one notch to “A” with a negative outlook, citing pressure on its digital products such as flat panel TVs. The rating, which S&P said it could be lowered again in the future, is the sixth-highest on the agency’s scale of 22. The downgrade came after Panasonic expected a loss of $5.3 billion this year. Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s said that Panasonic’s move to take full ownership of Sanyo Electric and Panasonic Electric Works along with large net losses as a result of business reorganization since 2009 have weakened its financial position.

Apple fixing iPhone 4S battery drain due to software bugs in iOS 5 operating system: Apple is working to squash software bugs that have evidently been eating away at battery life in the iPhone 4s and other gadgets powered by its latest mobile operating system. Apple’s new iOS 5 operating system was released last month for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices. Apple has found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and will release a software update to address those in a few weeks. Some iPhone users took to Twitter and other online venues to complain about batteries not lasting through a day. While Apple reportedly contacted some iPhone 4S owners to ask about battery concerns, the comment Wednesday was the first time the company publicly addressed the issue.

Fujitsu Announces New Technical Backgrounder Highlighting Simplified Motor Control Design for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles: Fujitsu today issued a new technical backgrounder describing how hybrid (HEV) and electric (EV) vehicle motors operate, and how the MB91580 series motor control microcontrollers (MCUs) simplify hybrid and electric vehicle design. The new MB91580 series, a part of the Fujitsu FR family of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers offers 3-phase inverter motor control and an embedded resolver interface for electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
