Casio announced today that it plans to release a new projector, the XJ-H2650, in July of this year. The XJ-H2650 equipped with an original mercury-free light source with a roughly 20,000-hour lifespan, delivers WXGA (1280 x 800 dot) high-brightness projection of 3,500 ANSI lumens. The XJ-H2650 projector achieves high brightness projection of 3,500 ANSI lumens using a mercury-free light source by projecting three colors through a DLPchip: red emitted by a high-lumen red LED, green converted from blue laser light with a phosphor, and blue emitted by a high-lumen blue LED.

Fujitsu today announced development of the world’s smallest and slimmest palm vein authentication sensor that is capable of being employed in tablet devices. By upgrading the technology’s design with new image sensors and other optical components, Fujitsu has successfully slimmed down the new sensor to a thickness of 5 mm.Through repeated simulations, Fujitsu has developed a new low-distortion wide-angle lens that offers a field of view equivalent to that of existing sensors, regardless of reductions in size and thickness, as well as a diffused lighting system for uniform luminance distribution. These developments ensure that the new sensor is compatible with authentication data from existing palm vein sensors.

Apple announced its earnings results on Tuesday, with net profit for the first three months of this year nearly double those of a year ago. Apple’s first-quarter revenues totaled a staggering US$39.2 billion, up 59 percent, while operating profit amounted to $15.4 billion, up 97 percent. Its operating margin was 39.3 percent, which means it made a profit of almost $40 for every $100 worth of products it manufactured and sold. Main rival Samsung Electronics is estimated to have achieved W45 trillion ($60 billion) in revenues and W5.8 trillion ($7 billion) in operating profit in the first quarter (US$1=W1, 141). But that includes money made from semiconductors, TV sets and LCD screens as well as smartphones and other mobile gadgets. Apple managed to achieve similar revenues by selling only finished mobile devices iPhone, iPad and iPod. Samsung’s operating profit was only 33 percent of what Apple made.
