Struggling Japanese chipmaker Elpida Memory incurred a group net loss of 44.45 billion yen (468.36965 million U.S. dollars) in the April-June quarter, against a loss of 13.77 billion yen a year earlier. In the first quarter of fiscal 2009 ending next March, Elpida, a maker of dynamic random access memory chips used mainly in mobile phones and personal computers, said it booked a group operating loss of 42.31 billion yen on sales of 72.57 billion yen, down 33.6%.

While the world’s No. 3 chipmaker did not give an earnings forecast for fiscal 2009, citing uncertainty about the business environment, it sounded an optimistic note on the chip market in the upcoming quarters.
